Almond blossom, one of the first flowers to open in late winter, gives this gift tag its subject, with small fairies set among the pale pink sprays. Tags like this were printed in large numbers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when color printing made inexpensive decorative cards popular for holidays and presents. The almond tree has long been a symbol of hope and renewal, and the pairing of blossom with fairy figures reflects the period's taste for sentimental, nature-themed imagery. Look closely at the fine linework and the small details of the figures.
