Eight separate cards are printed together on this sheet, which suggests they were meant to be cut apart and given as small greetings. The almond tree is one of the first to flower in late winter, and its blossom has long stood for hope and renewal. In the Bible, an almond branch that budded overnight in Aaron's rod (Numbers 17) was a sign of divine choice. Sheets like this were often produced in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when color lithography made sentimental and devotional images widely available. The blend of fairy and scriptural symbolism places the design between the religious and the whimsical.
