Eight copies of the same Beech Tree Fairy card share one sheet, which suggests they were printed in a batch and meant to be cut apart and sold or sent individually. Fairies like this one were a staple of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century greeting and scrap cards, where sentimental illustration blended with folklore about spirits living in woods and trees. Beech trees appear often in English legend and nature writing, so a fairy linked to one would have felt familiar to the buyers of such cards. Looking closely at the repeated figure shows how printers used one design many times over.
