Eight small labels share one sheet, each built around a fairy, and the laburnum, or golden chain tree, gives the sheet its name. Printed decorative sheets like this were common in the later 1800s, when fairy imagery was popular in children's books and parlor art, and such labels were often pasted onto jars, boxes, and albums. Laburnum's drooping clusters of yellow flowers made it a favorite ornamental tree in British gardens, but its seeds and pods are poisonous, a detail worth remembering when looking at such a cheerful motif.
