Almond is one of the first trees to bloom in late winter, its pink and white flowers opening before the leaves appear, which made it an early emblem of spring in Mediterranean and European tradition. In this picture the blossom sets the mood, tying the figure to that season of renewal. Flower-fairy pictures like this grew popular in Britain in the late 1800s, when illustrators often paired winged figures with particular plants. The religious heading on this board reflects how angel and fairy imagery share a visual language of wings, light and blossom.
