Tulip Brand is the name printed across this crate label, with a bright red tulip set against a background of apples, the kind of cheerful commercial art that once marked fruit shipped out of orchard country. Crate labels like this one were pasted to the ends of wooden boxes so buyers at distant markets could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. Between roughly 1880 and 1930, many growers in the western United States used colorful lithographed labels to sell their apples as a premium product, and the brand names often promised a particular region or quality. Look closely at the lettering and the color blocks, which show how printers worked before photographic reproduction became common.
