Hoboken, New Jersey, a port city just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, is the setting for this watercolor and ink drawing, which turns its working-class streets into the subject. The drawing is dated 1915, years before Stuart Davis became known as a modernist painter, and it appeared in The Liberator, the radical monthly, in August 1922. Cartoons like this one let left-wing magazines of the period comment on labor and city life through everyday scenes. It is also worth looking at as an early example of Davis's graphic work.
