A color lithographic poster announces a Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern excursion to Atlantic City, New Jersey, on August 2, 1900, which sets it apart from the railroad posters that promote routes within the Midwest. Strobridge & Co., a Cincinnati lithographer that also maintained a New York office, printed it to attract passengers to the trip. Excursions like this were a common way railroads filled seats in summer, carrying families and social groups to the Jersey shore. Atlantic City, with its boardwalk and large hotels, was one of the most popular seaside resorts of the period.
