Titled simply "Pilgrims going to church," this lithograph dates to about 1893 and appeared in Annie C. Cady's study of the Americas before Columbus, published that year in Philadelphia. It shows the Pilgrims of the 1620s and later, whose Sabbath walks to meeting were part of daily life on the Massachusetts frontier. Colonists often carried firearms to worship, a reminder that danger could follow them even to church. Its placement in a book about pre-Columbian America shows how publishers used later colonial scenes to illustrate the continent's wider story.
