The old stone church at Sleepy Hollow, the Dutch Reformed building near Tarrytown, New York, gained lasting fame when Washington Irving set his 1820 tale in its neighborhood. This wood engraving reproduces a painting by A. Wordsworth Thompson and appeared in Harper's Weekly in May 1882, with the source photograph made by the Pach studio. Interest in the church and its churchyard grew as readers and artists sought out the landscape Irving had described. The engraver builds the stone walls and shadowed trees entirely from line work, so the tones depend on the density of the strokes.
