The particular subject here is the library at Sagamore Hill, the Oyster Bay, New York, home that Theodore Roosevelt built in the early 1880s and returned to whenever he could. The halftone appeared in Town & Country on June 7, 1902, pages 10 and 11, while Roosevelt was in his first term as president, so the room was presented to magazine readers as a glimpse of the president's private life. Its shelves of books reflect the reading habits for which Roosevelt was famous, and the picture is a useful record of how a working study looked in that era.
