The title "Lydiachild" is the only detail this record gives, and it points to a single figure, a woman named Lydia shown with a child, rather than a crowded holiday scene. Thanksgiving in the 1800s was still far from a settled national holiday. Local customs varied widely until 1863, when Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanks, and the holiday was usually marked at home with family gatherings, church services and a large meal. Pictures from this era often present domestic life as a moral ideal, so a portrait of a mother and child fits the period's emphasis on family and home.
