Lydia Maria Child's verse "Over the River and Through the Wood" gives this picture its subject, a family journey to a grandparent's house for a holiday dinner. Child, a writer and abolitionist, first published the poem in 1844 as "A Thanksgiving Story" in her children's book *Flowers for Children*. Its sleigh ride and snowy farm scenery helped shape how many Americans pictured Thanksgiving in the nineteenth century, and the lines were later often sung as a Christmas song. Worth noticing is how a small domestic scene of travel and family became a lasting image of the holiday.
