Engraved expressly for *Godey's Lady's Book*, this oval, half-length portrait of Sarah Josepha Hale was based on a painting by W.H. Chambers and cut by W.G. Armstrong. Hale edited that influential monthly for four decades, and it shaped American taste in fiction, fashion and household advice. She also campaigned for a national day of Thanksgiving through years of letters to public officials, a push that helped lead to Abraham Lincoln's proclamation in 1863. She wrote the poem "Mary Had a Little Lamb," published in 1830.
