Lead with what sets this view apart: the Gatun Locks on the Panama Canal, shown here with the emergency dams in place across the lock chambers. The locks, a flight of three steps that lift ships roughly 85 feet from the Atlantic side to Gatun Lake, were completed in 1913 during the canal's construction under the American administration. Theodore Roosevelt, president when work accelerated and a driving force behind the project, is the reason this engineering feat appears on a gallery board devoted to him. The panoramic format lets you take in the scale of the concrete structures and the surrounding landscape, which helps explain why the canal was called one of the great engineering achievements of its age.
