Norma Talmadge, the silent-film actress, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced and distributed images like this one to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, and its negatives were often captioned with names that were later checked against other sources. Talmadge was one of the most popular screen stars of the 1910s and early 1920s, known for her dramatic and comedic roles, so a portrait of her from this studio reflects the public appetite for film celebrities of the period. The record notes that the title comes from unverified data, so the identification should be read with that caveat in mind.
