The title on this glass negative spells the name Tchaikowsky, an older form of the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, though the record flags the label as unverified. Bain News Service, the New York agency behind the George Grantham Bain Collection, sold pictures of performers and public figures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so a musical subject would fit its output. Because the composer died in 1893, before the agency began operating, the sitter may well be another person with the same surname. Glass negatives like this one preserve fine detail and document news photography of their era.
