The only identifying detail here is the surname Maazel, which the record flags as unverified and taken from the Bain News Service negative or its caption card, so the sitter's identity remains an open question. The image survives as a glass negative no larger than 5 by 7 inches, a format the agency's staff used for much of their everyday news work. George Grantham Bain founded the service in New York in 1899, and it supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures, events and street scenes for decades. Its negatives later passed to the Library of Congress, which keeps them as a record of that busy reporting trade.
