The only name attached to this glass negative is Annie Christitch, a title the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives or caption cards, and the record notes that this identification has not been verified. George Grantham Bain ran a New York news photo service from around 1900, supplying newspapers with pictures of people and events that editors needed quickly, and many of its glass plates are portraits of ordinary figures as well as public occasions. Without a date or a confirmed identity, the picture is best read as an example of that newsroom practice, in which captions were written in a hurry and sometimes corrected later.
