A printed cotton banner carrying the Republican ticket of Abraham Lincoln for president and Hannibal Hamlin for vice president is a clear survivor of the 1860 campaign. Lincoln had won his party's nomination at the Chicago convention that May, and campaign makers quickly turned out flags, banners and handkerchiefs to carry his name into parades and rallies over the summer and fall. At about 59 by 89 centimeters, this piece was large enough to hang or carry at public gatherings and be read from a distance. It was made by H. C. Howard of Philadelphia, a maker of political goods in an election year when such items were in heavy demand.
