The title suggests a contest between two craft, a theme that fits France, where crewed ballooning began in the 1780s. Early flights from Paris quickly became public spectacles, and rival designs competed for attention: the hot-air balloons of the Montgolfier brothers and the hydrogen-filled craft of Jacques Charles and his collaborators. Pictures of paired balloons were a popular way to convey the excitement of this new sport and the national pride attached to it. Look closely at the balloons' shapes and the crowd below to judge how the scene was meant to feel.
