A church steeple looms in the foreground of this stereoscopic daguerreotype, with the rooftops of Paris stretching away behind it, and the paired views give the scene its sense of depth through a stereoscope. Made between 1850 and 1860, it is a unique positive on a silver-coated copper plate, so no other copy of this exact view exists. The French hallmark Houssemaine Garanti 40 points to the silver standards of Paris workshops of the period. Views like this were popular with travelers and home viewers during the Second Empire, when Haussmann's boulevards were reshaping the city.
