This photograph shows President Theodore Roosevelt with Rear Admiral Robley D. "Fighting Bob" Evans aboard the presidential yacht *Mayflower*, a vessel Roosevelt used for trips along the Atlantic coast. Evans had earned his nickname as a combat commander in the Spanish-American War, when he led the battleship *Iowa* at Santiago de Cuba in 1898, and his close ties to the president made him a familiar figure in the White House years. The print was made by William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer whose studio produced many portraits of public figures, and it was registered for copyright around 1908. The date and some caption details come from an older card and have not been independently verified.
