Taken by Washington photographer B.M. Clinedinst and registered for copyright, this portrait shows Theodore Roosevelt in the first months of his presidency. Roosevelt had taken office in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, and the caption card's date of November 16, 1901, would place the sitting within weeks of that transition. Clinedinst worked in the capital, where studio portraits of officials were commonly made and reproduced. The date comes from an old caption card and is unverified, so the exact day should be read with some caution.
