Titled simply *Christmas*, this picture belongs to a long tradition of holiday imagery that took much of its modern form in the nineteenth century. Before then, Christmas was observed unevenly across Europe and North America, and illustrated magazines, greeting cards, and printed carols helped fix the scenes many people now associate with the season: evergreens brought indoors, families gathered around a table, and snow on the windows. Artists working in this vein used such details to suggest warmth, generosity, and a sense of home. The small domestic touches are often where the sentiment lies.
