Holiday shoppers are the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The record gives no date, but the Bain News Service, which George Grantham Bain founded in New York around 1900, produced most of its work in the early decades of the twentieth century, when its photographers documented everyday urban life for newspapers and magazines. The title comes from the agency's own notes, which were not always verified, so the scene is best read as a general view of Christmas shopping in that period. Glass plates like this one preserve fine detail and a wide tonal range, qualities that made the medium a standard for news and commercial work before film became common.
