Sixth Avenue in Manhattan is the setting here, caught during the holiday rush of 1910, when shoppers crowded the sidewalks in heavy winter coats and the store fronts were dressed for the season. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, made from a glass negative by the Bain News Service, a wire-photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers across the country. Its caption dates from that agency's own records, so the details are worth checking against other sources. Early street scenes like this one show how crowded and busy midtown shopping streets were before the holiday season.
