Christmas Morn" takes its name from the moment of the day rather than a particular scene, placing the viewer at the first light of the holiday. For many Christian households, that hour meant early church services, carols sung in the cold, and the quiet gathering of families before the rest of the day began. Religious prints of this kind were popular in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when they were hung in homes and used to mark the season. Look closely at how the light and the figures are arranged, since such images often rely on glow and stillness to suggest the sacred meaning of the morning.
