A Marine seated in the cockpit of a scout plane sets this glass negative apart from the many aviation views in the Bain collection. Scout aircraft were small, fast reconnaissance planes flown by naval and Marine aviators in the years after World War I, when both services were learning how to use aircraft for observation from ships and forward airfields. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, supplied images like this to newspapers eager to show readers new military machines. The date and the sitter's name are not recorded, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion remains uncertain.
