A mail plane captured on a glass negative is a reminder of how quickly flying moved from novelty to public service. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose plates now make up the George Grantham Bain Collection, supplied pictures to newspapers and magazines, so images like this were made to be published and captioned for readers. The United States began carrying mail by air in 1918, and the Post Office soon built routes linking major cities, with pilots flying open-cockpit biplanes through often harsh weather. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the specific flight or aircraft remains uncertain.
