The subject of this glass negative is a British Handley Page aeroplane, though the record gives that identification only as unverified caption data, so the exact model and date remain uncertain. Handley Page, founded in England in 1909, built large multi-engine biplanes, and its bombers drew wide attention during and after the First World War. The negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that circulated news photographs in the early twentieth century. Its wire-service origin shows how American readers followed aviation developments abroad during that period.
