What sets this engraving apart is that it was never finished. The plate reproduces a painting that Robert Edge Pine, an English-born artist who worked in Philadelphia, began and that Edward Savage completed. The scene shows the Continental Congress voting on independence in 1776, the moment that led to the Declaration that Thomas Jefferson drafted. Because the plate was left incomplete in the early 19th century, impressions pulled from it reflect an unfinished state, and restrikes from the plate were made late in that century.
