The sheet reproduces the Declaration of Independence as a facsimile, with portraits of the men who signed it arranged around the text. Jefferson drafted the document as one member of a five-man committee, and Congress revised his wording before adopting it on July 4, 1776. Most delegates signed the engrossed parchment later, in August. Facsimiles like this were popular in the nineteenth century as patriotic keepsakes and teaching aids, linking Jefferson's words to the signers as a group.
