The record gives only the name "A. Stanley," and the Bain News Service supplied that title without verification, so the sitter's identity remains uncertain. The picture survives as a glass negative of five by seven inches or smaller, a format photographers used widely before flexible film became common. George Grantham Bain started his news photography service in New York in 1899, and his agency sent images to newspapers across the country for decades. Pictures like this one, made for quick reproduction, offer a useful look at the working practices of early press photography.
