This portrait shows John R. Brinkley, the Kansas physician who gained national notoriety in the 1920s for performing goat gland transplant operations, which he promoted as a cure for impotence and other ailments. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption data that the Bain News Service supplied and that has not been independently verified. Brinkley later built a powerful radio station just across the Texas border in Mexico, and he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Kansas. Bain's studio made news pictures of public figures, so the image likely reflects the attention his medical claims drew at the time.
