The only identification recorded for this glass negative is the name Faustine Dennis, and the Bain News Service itself marked that title as unverified. The plate, measuring no more than 5 by 7 inches, belongs to the agency that George Grantham Bain founded in New York around 1899 to sell news photographs to newspapers. Its files of glass negatives are now a major part of the Library of Congress holdings from the early twentieth century. With no date given, the picture is best read as an example of that fast commercial trade in portraits and news images.
