Elsie Ferguson, the stage and silent-film actress, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the portraits made by the Bain News Service and later gathered into the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Ferguson was a popular Broadway star in the 1910s and early 1920s, and studio portraits like this one were routinely distributed to newspapers and magazines to accompany theater and film stories. The record lists no date for the negative, and its identification comes from the caption cards the agency kept, so the sitter's name is recorded as the agency gave it. Bain's glass plates, made between about 1900 and 1920, document a busy period of American press photography.
