The record names only Mrs. Jas. Speyer, a title the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives and caption cards, and the catalog notes that the identification has not been verified. If it is correct, the sitter would have been the wife of James Speyer, a New York banker, and part of the social and philanthropic circles the Bain studio photographed often. The picture survives as a glass negative no larger than 5 by 7 inches, a format Bain's photographers used widely for portraits and news work in the early twentieth century. Its missing date is a reminder of how many named sitters passed through these files without a firm record of when they were taken.
