The sitter is recorded as Mrs. Martin Beck, though that name comes from unverified notes kept by the Bain News Service. Her husband was a leading vaudeville manager who ran the Orpheum circuit and opened the Palace theater in New York in 1913. The Bain agency, founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied news and portrait photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and glass negatives like this one were the standard medium before flexible film took over.
