Titled simply "Testing plane," this glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied photographs to newspapers and magazines. The agency was founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899, and its glass-plate negatives captured fine detail that suited news reproduction. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified data supplied by the agency, so the specific aircraft and occasion remain uncertain. Even so, the subject places the picture among the early efforts to build and test flying machines in the years after the Wright brothers' first powered flights in 1903.
