Jamestown in 1883 was a young railroad town on the James River in the eastern part of Dakota Territory. The Northern Pacific line reached the site in the early 1870s, and the town grew as a shipping point for wheat and livestock from the surrounding prairie farms. As the seat of Stutsman County, it drew farmers, merchants, and county officials into regular dealings at its courthouse and stores. Settlers arriving by rail were turning sod on land that had been open range only a few years earlier, and the town's churches, schools, and grain elevators reflected a community that expected to stay. Dakota would not become a state until 1889, so residents in 1883 were living in a territory still waiting for its final shape.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Jamestown, Dakota Territory, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
