Madison, in the Dakota Territory's Lake County, was a young railroad and farm town in 1883, only a few years removed from its founding in the late 1870s. Settlers who had arrived with the rail lines were breaking prairie sod for wheat and corn, and the town served as the county seat and a shipping point for the surrounding farms. Its most notable institution was the territorial normal school, opened in 1881 to train teachers for a population that expected its schools, churches, and courthouse to keep pace with its growth. Statehood was still six years away, so residents thought of themselves as pioneers in a territory whose future boundaries and capital were still being argued over.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Madison, Dakota Territory, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
