Redfield, Dakota Territory, in 1883 was a young railroad town on the James River prairie, not yet three years old. The Chicago and North Western line had reached it around 1880, and the railroad turned the settlement into a shipping point for wheat and other grain grown on the surrounding homesteads. Spink County had been organized only a few years earlier, and the town's position as county seat gave it a courthouse, merchants, and a growing set of civic disputes over offices and services. Dakota was still a territory governed from Washington, and statehood was six years away, so residents in 1883 were building the town's institutions as they went.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Redfield, Dakota Territory, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
