Watertown, in the eastern part of Dakota Territory, was a young railroad and farm town in 1883. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul line had reached it only a few years earlier, and grain and livestock moving through its depot tied the town to markets far to the east. Settlers were still arriving during the territory's land boom of the early 1880s, and new stores, churches and schools were filling streets that had been open prairie not long before. As the seat of Codington County, Watertown drew farmers from the surrounding countryside to its courthouse and market days. Its residents would have known it as a stopping point where newcomers outfitted themselves before heading farther into the territory.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Watertown, Dakota Territory, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
