Bismarck in 1883 was a young railroad town on the east bank of the Missouri River in Dakota Territory. The Northern Pacific Railway had reached the site in 1872, and the town grew around its depot and steamboat landing, drawing merchants, freighters, and settlers headed west. The name honored the German statesman Otto von Bismarck, chosen to encourage German immigrants to settle the region. That same year the territory moved its capital to Bismarck from Yankton, which brought new offices and a rivalry with older towns. Fort Abraham Lincoln, a few miles south, was the post from which George Armstrong Custer rode in 1876, so residents knew the town as a gateway to the plains and the railroad.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Bismarck, Dakota Territory, drawn in 1883. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
