Macon City, the seat of Macon County in north-central Missouri, was a railroad and farm town in 1869, a few years after the Civil War had divided its residents and left the county's fields and fences damaged. The Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad had reached the area before the war, and the tracks tied the town's grain, livestock, and farm goods to shipping points to the east and west. Merchants, lawyers, and county officials ran the courthouse square, and the churches, schools, and lodges along its streets gave the town its social life. An 1869 view of the town would have shown residents a place still rebuilding its trade and its civic order during Missouri's postwar years.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Macon City, Missouri, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
