Lexington, Missouri, in 1869 was a river town in Lafayette County, set on high bluffs above the Missouri River between Kansas City and St. Joseph. Its economy rested on hemp, grown on the rich bottomland around town and pressed into bales for shipment, along with the grain and livestock that steamboats carried downriver. Eight years earlier, in September 1861, the town had been the scene of the Battle of Lexington, where Confederate forces under Sterling Price forced the Union garrison under Colonel James Mulligan to surrender after a siege of several days. Residents in 1869 still lived with that memory, since the war had divided loyalties across the county and left many families and businesses to recover from it.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Lexington, Missouri, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
