Mexico, Missouri, in 1869 was the county seat of Audrain County in the north-central part of the state, a farm town where corn, wheat, hemp, and livestock brought in most of the local income. The North Missouri Railroad had reached the town before the Civil War, linking its grain and stock shipments to St. Louis and the wider rail network, and that connection shaped its growth in the years after the war. A. Ruger's bird's-eye view shows the streets and buildings laid out around the courthouse, the center of county government and trade that residents would have recognized as the town's heart. In 1869 most people in Mexico would have known it as a quiet, practical county seat still recovering from the disruptions of the war, with its fortunes tied to farm prices and the trains that carried their goods away.
