Pacific, Missouri, in 1869 was a young railroad town in Franklin County, about 40 miles west of St. Louis, and it took its name from the Pacific Railroad whose line ran through the settlement. The railroad had come through only in the 1850s, and it made the town a stop for freight, passengers, and the produce of the surrounding farms. Missouri was still recovering from the Civil War, which had divided many river and rail communities in the state, and the postwar years brought new settlers and business to towns along the line. Residents would have known Pacific mainly as a depot on the route between St. Louis and the interior, where grain, livestock, and goods moved by train.
