A poster advertising a sideshow at the Vermont State Fair sets this view of Rutland apart from the town scenes it might otherwise resemble. Fairs in the early 1940s drew farm families and townspeople with midway attractions, and sideshow banners like this one were built to catch the eye of passersby and promise novelty acts. The Farm Security Administration, and later the Office of War Information, documented everyday American life across the country during these years. This negative, made in September 1941, preserves a small piece of a fall fair just before the United States entered the war.
